On December 6th the Chapín Abajo community in El Estor, Izabal, Guatemala was violently evicted, affecting 50 Maya Q’eqchi’ families. There are 25 arrest warrants against Q’eqchi’ Ancestral Authorities. Women and minors were arbitrarily detained without any justification by the National Civil Police (PNC). This eviction was on behalf of the the company NaturAceites - a leading company in the production of African palm oil in Guatemala, and with a high rate of human rights violations.
“No one is an invader or a thief of their own Ancestral Lands. Returning to Ancestral Lands is a right and not a crime. We know who we are - we were taken from our land, we were enslaved, but we are still fighting.” - Maya Q’eqchi’ Ancestral Authority
The International Mayan League, the only Maya women and youth led organization in the U.S. is communicating and coordinating directly with the Q’eqchi’ Ancestral Authorities of the Chapín Abajo community, and other trusted Q’eqchi’ community leaders. This emergency campaign to support the Chapín Abajo community has been approved by the Q’eqchi’ Ancestral Authorities of Chapín Abajo. This violent eviction has resulted in a lack of daily sustenance, clothing and housing. There are legal expenses to pay defense lawyers, likewise, the payment of bail for four community members who were detained. There are medical needs for the injured. We will be raising funds for the Chapín Abajo community through December 2022 to support the community in this time of crisis.
Thank you for your solidarity and support to the Maya Q’eqchi’ Nation and the Maya in general.

"Running is medicine. Running is tradition. Running is healing. Running is prayer. Running is community. Indigenous people are known for running – for the messages they carry – for the prayers they carry – for the tradition it brings. For Indigenous Peoples Day 2022, we run together as relatives, as a community, to recognize and celebrate Indigenous people! To acknowledge the past and what Native people have had to experience to be here today. We celebrate the present existence of Indigenous people and all the good medicine we bring to our relatives and to the lands. As we look ahead – we have the opportunity to dismantle current systems of oppression and racism and rebuild a better and visible future! Our relatives across Turtle Island (North America) are sharing so much of their hard work to support their communities and build a future for our next generations. This virtual race is to bring and call people in – to support Indigenous People, uplift the real history and stories, their strength, and their resilience – because we are still here! We are thriving.” – Jordan Marie Daniel
