HELP KEEP THE ZAMBEZI VALLEY A SAFE PLACE FOR ELEPHANTS
Elephants across Africa are in danger. African savanna elephants, which grace the Zambezi Valley with their magnificence, have been reclassified from “vulnerable” to “endangered” in the IUCN's latest assessment. According to the report, the population of the African savanna elephant across the continent has decreased by at least 60% over the past 50 years.
Imagine having your only source of food for the year ahead destroyed overnight by elephants, buffalos or even a troop of baboons. Think how you might feel if your goats or cattle were killed by a lion, or a loved one injured by a crocodile or killed by an elephant.
Human Wildlife Conflict (HWC) is not an easy subject from any viewpoint – it can mean loss of life and livelihoods, it rouses fear or anger, and sometimes wildlife is killed in defense or retaliation. One of Zambezi Elephant Fund’s (ZEF’s) primary focus areas is Community Resilience: the means by which interactions with wildlife can be shifted away from conflict toward something more beneficial, where animal populations thrive, but, also, the people who live alongside them.
The transition from elephant conflict to co-existence for long term conservation benefits is ZEF’s goal.
ZEF aspires to secure a long-lasting future for elephants and their rangelands, not only with strategic, cost-effective funding for the projects that align with their ambitions, such as Human Elephant Co-Existence, but with collaborative and innovative ideas and support.
You can help ZEF achieve its goals by participating in the Saving the Elephants Run/Walk, sharing ZEF’s work in elephant conservation across your networks, or raising additional funds for the specific needs listed on this page.
